Spelling Bee Canceled For Tonight - Ben Wray Wins Elementary Championship

(BEDFORD) - Ben Wray is the Elementary Champion of the 41st Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee.

The elementary competition was held Tuesday afternoon at Shafer Auditorium. Today's championship round has been canceled due to weather.

Wray, a 4th grader at Fayetteville Elementary, will now compete against middle school champions which will be rescheduled.

Placing third was Wyatt Sowders, a 4th grader at Heltonville Elementary. He spelled "veteran" incorrectly in round 6.

Kristina Rainey, a 4th grader at Stalker Elementary and Wray battled from four more rounds when Rainey spelled "commitment" incorrectly. Wray took the title after spelling "unity."

Wray will now join the middle school championship for the overall title.

Competing were:

1340 AM WBIW is hosting the event. The public is invited to the free event to support their favorite contestant.

All participants will receive a 1340 AM WBIW Spelling Bee t-shirt and a certificate. The top three will also receive a bee bobble-head trophy. The overall Spelling Bee champion will receive a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank and a pizza party, provided by Marcos Pizza, for their homeroom.

The champion will then advance to the 2015 Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 21 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

The Spelling Bee Champion of 2014 was Jathan Howe, from Shawswick Middle School.
