Brown Co. Humane Society Found Homes For 98% Of Animals

Last updated on Friday, February 20, 2015

(BROWN CO.) - The Brown County Humane Society found homes for 98 percent of the animals that entered their doors in 2014 - giving the shelter the best “save rate” in the country.

WFIU reports that the organization has been pushing programs that takes animals out of the shelter and puts them in temporary foster care before they find permanent homes.

Jane Weatherford, treasurer of the society, has been working with the organization for more than 30 years. She says the foster program has been around since about 2008, but there has been a big emphasis on it in recent years.

In addition to the foster program, a robust spay and neuter program has resulted in 57 percent fewer pets coming into the shelter since 2010.

The program provides financial assistance to people in the county to get their pets spayed and neutered.
