(GOOSE POND) - Birdwatching enthusiasts have something new to add to their viewing list thanks to the arrival of a new-to-the-area species of owl.

The Greene County Daily World reports that a Snowy Owl has made its way to the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area. And local birdwatchers have the photos to document the newest arrival, which has caused quite a stir of excitement among the community of birdwatchers in the area.

The first-ever sighting of a Snowy Owl in Greene County was made by members of the Friends of Goose Pond and other residents.

Property Manager Travis Stoelting says the owl had been handing around south of Goose Pond and roosting in the main portion of the pond.

This is the first-ever record for Greene County of a Snowy Owl. They usually don't get into southern Indiana.

Bird enthusiasts say this past winter has cause an eruption in the birth of birds, causing them to migrate in search of food. Because there were more Snowy Owls hatched, the food supply is down in the Arctic area forcing the birds to look elsewhere for prey.
