UPDATED - Names Released Of Children Involved In Fatal Shooting

Last updated on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

(PAOLI) - Two people are dead and one is in critical condition after a domestic fight at 555 North Helms Street in Paoli on Tuesday night.

Police were notified about the shooting at 5:25 p.m.

When police arrived they found 33-year-old Melissa Randolph of Paoli bleeding from multiple lacerations and holding her baby. The child was not injured.

She and her estranged husband, 37-year-old Jeremy Gehl also of Paoli, were involved in a physical fight inside the home. During that fight Gehl attacked Randolph with a knife, cutting her multiple times. Police are not saying what the argument was over.

Police say after hearing the commotion, the couple's 6-year-old Leon Gehl and 3-year-old Addison Gehl came downstairs. When Gehl saw the children he shot them both with a shotgun and then turned the weapon on himself.

Gehl was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Coroner's office. Both children were flown by helicopter to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.

Addison Gehl died a few hours later from her injuries. Leon Gehl is listed in critical condition.

Randolph was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville and was later transferred to Kosair to be with her children.

"Anytime there's a shooting especially in the community, the community is going to take it difficult more so when there's children and we consider any sort of homicide or murder a senseless crime when one turns on his own children obviously there's going to be questions and concerns within the community and at this point we would ask the community to keep this family and the children specifically in their thoughts and prayers," ISP spokesperson Sgt. Phillip Hensley said at the scene.

Police say there was not a history of domestic violence between the two, but they were familiar with Gehl.

State Police investigators and crime scene technicians, as well as officers from the Orange County Sheriff's and Paoli Police Departments continue to conduct their investigation at the residence.
