(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after courthouse security notices he had a syringe in his waistband when he went through the security checkpoint.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley officers were called to Courthouse Plaza just after 1 p.m. Monday.

"The deputies stopped Chase Curtis after he set off the metal detector," Parsley says. "They then ran the hand-held detector over him and that is when the noticed a syringe in his waistband."

23-year-old Curtis was detained, until a Bedford Drug officer arrived.

Officers recovered the syringe and found a straw in a cigarette packaged that tested positive for heroin, razor blades, rolling papers and other drug paraphernalia.

"They also recovered a document with detailed instructions on how to make meth," Parsley says.

Curtis was arrested on two counts of possession of a schedule I controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
