(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University has joined the National Academy of Inventors, an organization that includes the nation’s leading university and nonprofit research institutions and encourages efforts to improve society through innovation.
IU is among several high-profile research institutions to join the National Academy of Inventors so far in 2015. Select others include Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Virginia, the University of Texas at Austin, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Republic of China's Academia Sinica.
Founded in 2010, the academy serves its members by honoring academic invention, enhancing the visibility of technology development and advocating academic innovation within local communities. In doing so, it serves as a resource to improve local economies through increased industry research contracts and more interaction with companies and organizations.
"Given Indiana University's commitment to enhancing our state's economic vitality through innovation and its desire to instill a culture of 'building and making' at all IU campuses statewide, our membership in the National Academy of Inventors further enlightens our efforts," said IU Vice President for Engagement Bill Stephan. "We are honored to join NAI and to be affiliated with other member institutions that share similar interests."
The National Academy of Inventors also encourages intellectual property disclosure, as well as the education and mentorship of innovative students. In addition, the academy helps society better understand the usefulness of university and nonprofit-based research and helps researchers develop relevant inventions while working with their institutions' patent and licensing staff.
Based at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla., the National Academy of Inventors has more than 160 member institutions worldwide. The organization also edits the multidiscipline journal Technology and Innovation, published by Cognizant Communication Corp.
IU Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Richard DiMarchi will give a keynote address at the academy's fourth annual conference March 19 and 20 in Pasadena, Calif. One of the world's leading peptide chemists and a prolific entrepreneur, DiMarchi was named an NAI Fellow this year.
Indiana University is designated as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. This recognizes IU's commitment across all its campuses to being a leading institution in fostering regional economic development.
