(BLOOMINGTON) - Construction of Interstate 69 near Bloomington is causing headaches for some local school bus drivers.

Drivers for Monroe County Community School Corp. have had to improvise routes because of detours. The Herald-Times reports four contract bus drivers, who pay for gas out of pocket, have had their pay increased.

One driver whose route was extended by 2 1/2 miles got $152 in back pay.

For drivers paid an hourly rate, the school district's transportation director says it's hard to estimate how much more fuel they're using. But he says it likely isn't costing the district that much more.

The school district has 122 bus routes.
