Last updated on Tuesday, February 24, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women is holding a Women’s Leadership Development Event to give women the opportunity to learn how to get involved and make a difference in their community.

The event is held annually as part of Women's History Month. The theme for this year's event is "Lead With a Story," and it will be taking place on Tuesday, March 3, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 401 N. Morton St.

The Women's Leadership Development Event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m., during which time participants can enjoy refreshments, network and learn more about getting involved with City of Bloomington Boards and Commissions, as well as other local agencies. The event will include presentations followed by panel questions and answers. There will also be an award presentation to the 2015 Emerging Leader and presentations given by the 2015 Leadership Scholarship recipients. This event is free and open to the public.

Over the past four years, 2015 Emerging Leader Alycin Bektesh has emerged as a strong leader in the field of journalism and volunteering in the community. Bektesh has led the WFHB News Department, where she has covered issues surrounding women's health, equal rights and sexual assault. Through this role, she became a mentor and role model to the hundreds of women who join WFHB and provides a strong female voice within the Bloomington community. Outside of the workplace, Bektesh serves on nonprofit boards, including the Bloomington Press Club and the Bloomington Arts Alliance, and volunteers her time at the Interfaith Winter Shelter and Community Kitchen.

Presenters include Dr. Audrey T. McCluskey, African American and Diaspora Studies, who will be presenting "Mary McLeod Bethune and Fannie Lou Hamer: The Inner Light of Leadership;" Caroline Dowd-Higgins, Director of Career and Professional Development for the IU Alumni Association, who will be presenting "Fail Forward, Fast and Often!" and Jessica Levandowski, film and media producer, who will be presenting"A Woman in Film: Exploring the Characters That Shaped Me."

Co-sponsors of this event include American Association of University Women (AAUW) of the Wabash Valley, City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women, City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department, City of Bloomington Office of the Clerk, Indiana University Women's Student Association and Middle Way House.
