(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington woman was arrested after police found her intoxicated and her 6-week-old son left unattended in a bouncy seat within two feet of a space heater.
Police were called Thursday morning to a home in the 800 block of East Miller Drive after a request for a welfare check of two children after a family friend went to the home and couldn't get 22-year-old Erica Wells to answer the door.
According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joseph Qualters, when police arrived just after 11 a.m. they had to have the maintenance man open the door. Officers found Wells intoxicated and passed out on a downstairs couch and the baby crying upstairs.
Police also found drugs near the couch and two 12-packs of beer in the kitchen.
The baby was found crying, hot and sweaty and sitting in a bouncy seat two feet from a space heater.
The apartment was also being heated with an open oven set at 400 degrees.
After police got Wells awake she became belligerent and argumentative. She then attempted to go up stairs but fell on the stairs several times because of her level of intoxication.
The Department of Child Services were called and presented Wells with paperwork about the custody of the children. She then took the paperwork and tore it up. The biological fathers of Wells' two children, the infant and a 5-year-old, were allowed to take the children from the home.
She also reportedly scuffled with police officers as they took her to jail on charges of neglect of a dependent, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
She is being held at the Monroe County Jail on a $4,000 surety, $500 cash bond.
