Bedford Man Arrested After Slashing Man With Knife

Last updated on Wednesday, February 4, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after he allegedly slashed a man with a knife during a fight Tuesday afternoon.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, officers rushed to the 900 block of Fifth Street after police received several 911 call reporting a fight.

"The second caller reported one of the men had a knife," Parsley said.

When officers arrived they found a group of men fighting in the middle of Fifth Street and one had a knife.

"Officers ordered the man to put the knife down and get on the ground and he surrendered without further incident," Parsley says.

Officers then began questioning those that were involved in the fight and witnesses.

According to police, 23-year-old Steven Lovitt went to a home in the 900 block of Fifth Street looking for a man who owed him money.

"There were other individuals at the home and there was a verbal dispute and discussion on if the person who owed Mr. Lovitt money was there," Parsley added. "The argument became heated and turned physical moving into the street."

During the fight Lovitt allegedly pulled a folded knife from his pocket and cut one of the men on the left side of the neck.

"It was a minor injury," Parsley says. "The victim was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew and refused other treatment."

Lovitt was arrested on preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon and battery causing injury.
