(UNDATED) - Snow had been falling in southern Indiana for several hours causing travel to be difficult.

Lawrence and state road crews are out, but it is difficult to keep up with the snow still falling. Lawrence County Commissioners at 7:50 a.m. declared the county under a yellow travel advisory.

"Officials will continue to monitor travel conditions throughout today and tonight and may increase the travel advisory if needed," says Sheriff Mike Branham. "Please use caution if traveling today."

Yellow is the lowest level of local travel advisory, means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas.

Snow will continue to fall, at times heavy, by sunrise, especially along and south of I-70. Not much snow will fall north of Indianapolis, but 1 to 3 inches is possible for most of the metro area.

The projected snow amounts are higher south of Indy.

For now, we have a 3-5"+ forecast for Bloomington to Columbus with 5-7" expected from Seymour and Bedford to North Vernon.

Snow amounts from 8-12" are possible in the Louisville area. Traveling south of the Ohio River today will be very tough.

Other counties under a yellow travel advisor: Daviess, Washington, Knox, Jefferson, Pike and Clark counties are under a yellow travel advisory in the southern part of the state.

Floyd and Clark counties are under a red travel advisory. Which is the highest level of local travel advisory, means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. During a "warning" local travel advisory, individuals are directed to:
(A) refrain from all travel;
(B) comply with necessary emergency measures;
(C) cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans; and
(D) obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.
