Last updated on Tuesday, February 24, 2015

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham has named Aaron Shoults as chief deputy.

Shoults will replace Cody Medlock who is leaving the department to take a job as a special agent with the Naval Criminal investigative Service (NCIS). He will leave the department in March and that is when Shoults will fill the chief deputy position.

Shoults is currently serving on the Lawrence County Drug Task Force and played an integral role in the units successes.

He is a 1981 graduate of Mitchell High School and then attended Vincennes University where he earned an associates degree in law enforcement.

He began his law enforcement career at the Mitchell Police Department in 1987 and was the first certified DARE officer for Lawrence County. He served with the department for 12 years and left with the rank of sergeant and was then hired with the Lawrence County Police Department in 1998, where he continued to serve as a DARE officer. In 2008 he was assigned to the drug investigation unit.

Shoults has extensive training in active shooters in schools, business and residential security, drug investigations and interdiction and is scheduled to attend the Public Leadership Institute this year.

In addition to his duties as chief deputy, Shoults will also oversee the transition of new assignments to the Drug Task Force.

Shoults is married and has two children. He is also a member of the Spring Mill Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 172 and serves on the executive board.

"He has more than 29 years of of law enforcement along with his education, training, community involvement and leadership makes him a good fit to help guide the continued growth of the department and its personnel," Branham says. "I want to wish Cody and his family the best and I look forward to working with Aaron beginning in March."
