(UNDATED) - Two area business suffered in September as Bedford’s Kmart was notified it would be opening its doors for the last time in December, leaving 62 employees without a job.
Salem Tumbleweed Southwest Grill was destroyed by a fire. The restaurant was a complete loss. When the Salem Fire Department arrived there were flames shooting out of the roof.
Two Perish In Monroe Co. Plane Crash
Two people died in a plane crash in Monroe County.
Using dental record comparisons, Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer determined 51-year-old Russell Kotlarek from Saukville, Wisconsin and 72- year-old Thomas Saccio from Blounts Creek, North Carolina died when the plane went down in a wooded area behind 85 Oard Road near State Road 48, about a quarter mile north of the Monroe County Airport.
According to police, a person on board the Hurricane ultralight reported a mechanical issue, possibly involving fuel related mechanisms, to the Monroe County Airport tower. The airport manager says the pilot reported having low fuel pressure.
The pilot was about 7 miles from the airport when he radioed the tower. The pilot was given permission to land. The control tower asked the pilot to contact them again when he was 2 miles out. He did at 3 miles out. The control tower operators then saw a large amount of smoke and attempted to contact the pilot. There was no response.
Investigators say while the plane was approaching the airport from the north, traveling south, the plane lost altitude and crashed into a small shed and wooded area behind a home. The plane was immediately engulfed in flames.
Homecoming, Festival Royalty Crowned
Local royalty was crowned in September. Alexa Bailey was crowned Bedford North Lawrence High School homecoming queen during halftime of the Stars' game against the Seymour Owls. Bristol Anderson was named homecoming king. The Stars defeated Seymour 41 to 21.
Nisha Patel, a senior at Mitchell High School and daughter of Usha and Bhogilal Patel, was named homecoming queen. Jeremy Johnson, a senior at MHS and son of Mark Johnson and Theresa Scholl, was named homecoming king. Paige Courtwright, a sophomore at MHS and daughter of Jim and Stephanie Courtwright, was named homecoming princess. The Bluejackets defeated Crawford County Wolfpack 25-13
Bloomfield Junior/Senior High School Senior Cecilia "Ceci" Craig was crowned the 43rd Annual Bloomfield Apple Festival Queen. First runner-up was awarded to Madelynn Conner, a Junior at Bloomfield Junior/Senior High School. Bloomfield Junior/Senior High School Sophomore Daelyn Arthur was the second runner-up. She was also voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants.
Mitchell High School junior Anna Louise Kluender was crowned the 2014 Persimmon Festival Queen.
