Remembrance Ceremony Of Apollo One Fire Tonight

Last updated on Tuesday, January 27, 2015

(MITCHELL) - The Boyhood Home of Virgil I. Grissom in Mitchell will host a remembrance ceremony at 6:31 p.m. tonight, the exact time fire swept through the Apollo One space capsule during a pre-flight test on January 27, 1967.

Grissom and two fellow astronauts, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, were killed in the fire.

The Grissom house will be open from 6-7 p.m. to allow visitors to tour the home where Grissom grew up and to see special displays.

A moment of silence will be observed at 6:31 p.m. That will be followed by a prayer led by Allen Burris, pastor of the Mitchell Church of Christ, of which the Grissom family were members.

The home will also be open from March 21-23 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gus's Molly Brown flight in 1965.

The home is owned by Virgil I. Grissom Inc., a group dedicated to the preservation of Grissom's legacy. They open the home on special occasions and the group hopes to have the home open every Saturday from Memorial Day weekend through the end of October.

The group maintains a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GusGrissomBoyhoodMuseum, where photos of the home and upcoming events are posted.
