Crews for paving subcontractor Dave O'Mara of North Vernon placed a 4-inch lift of asphalt on the closed section of State Road 58 to support traffic through winter months. A surface layer of asphalt pavement will be installed in the spring.

(JACKSON CO.) - The sun was shining. The skies were blue. The smell of hot mix asphalt was in the air. Tuesday's break in January weather is just the break Indiana Department of Transportation officials needed to lay pavement and take a big step toward getting State Road 58 east of Kurtz open again to the motoring public.

Dave O'Mara crews were able to put down a 4-inch lift of asphalt along the realigned stretch of State Road 58 located on either side of the newly installed culvert at a branch of Bee Creek--3.75 miles west of State Road 135 in Jackson County.

Pavement striping, placing stone shoulders and other detail work has to be completed before the quarter-mile section of State Road 58 can be opened, but officials are hopeful barricades can be moved at the end of the day Friday.

A surface lift of asphalt will be put down next spring--completing work on this $845,497 Seymour District bridge project that relocated the creek branch approximately 30 feet east of where it had been. HIS Constructors, the project's prime contractor, raised the roadbed nearly five feet before installing a new 3-sided box structure with 10-foot rise, 36-foot span and 80-foot width.
