(BEDFORD) - John Saluke is started work as a Recreation Technician for the Hoosier National Forest.

He will be managing the Forest trail permit program and maintaining trails on the northern end of the Forest. Saluke will work with vendors on the Forest to sell permits and patrol the trail system for visitor safety.

Saluke grew up in Dayton, Ohio and attended Wright State University. He spent four years in the Army, including tours in South Korea and Iraq. After leaving the military in 2006, he went to Southwestern Oklahoma State and finished his Bachelor and Master's degree in Parks and Recreation. While in Oklahoma he did internships on the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site and on the Washita National Wildlife Refuge.

After graduating he worked two seasons for the Shoshone National Forest as a Wilderness Trail Technician. He and his coworkers agreed it was the greatest job in the world and he thoroughly enjoyed it.

However, when the Hoosier National Forest offered him a permanent job, he came. He's happy to be closer to his family in Ohio. He also looks forward to having a job where he is able to make more decisions and make a difference in the organization.

Saluke enjoys the scenic Midwest especially during the fall. He likes most outdoor activities and stays busy with a variety of extra-curricular activities.

He has been impressed with how smoothly the Hoosier operates and how organized the Forest is. He also has found everyone to be very friendly both on the Forest and in the community.

Saluke lives in Bedford.

Questions for Saluke regarding the trails program should be directed to the Hoosier's Bedford Office at (812) 275-5987.
