(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell man was arrested Tuesday after he made threats to harm others.

A Centerstone employee called 911 after 28-year-old Jayce Hughes told her he was going to the Lawrence County Courthouse to "put a bullet in the head" of a person there.

Bedford Police officers and courthouse security were put on alert. In the meantime Lawrence County Police discovered Hughes was wanted on a warrant for petition to revoke probation.

Deputies went to Hughes' home in the 1500 block of Rabbitsville Road.

"The first officer on the scene of Mr. Hughes residence was confronted as he pulled in the driveway with Mr. Hughes taking cover behind his vehicle and assuming a shooting stance with one hand down near his belt," says Sheriff Mike Branham.

According to the officer's report, Hughes yelled to the officer that he had a gun and was going to shoot the officer.

"The responding officer took cover and ordered Mr. Hughes to put his hands up and get down on the ground. Mr. Hughes started to comply, but then began resisting the officer's lawful orders by going in circles around a car," Sheriff Branham added. "The officer then deployed his taser on Mr. Hughes and backup arrived to take Mr. Hughes into custody."

Police discovered that Hughes had no weapons.

Hughes was checked by medical personnel and transported to the Lawrence County Security Center where he was charged on a warrant for petition to revoke bond and resisting law enforcement by force,

"I want to commend the responding officer, who used tremendous restraint in a very tense situation with no initial back-up," Sheriff Branham says. "As we have seen across the country over the last several months, this situation could have had a much different ending. I also want to emphasize the importance of complying with the lawful orders of law enforcement. Not doing so compromises the safety of everyone."
