(WASHINGTON CO.) - The Washington County Sheriff's Department arrested a homeless man after they discovered he was making meth in a local church.

The department received an anonymous call at 7:30 p.m. reporting a suspicious vehicle had stopped at a local church.

The caller reported seeing a person get out of the vehicle carrying a bag and then enter the church through the front door.

The Salem Leader reports that Deputy Wayne Blevins of the Washington County Sheriff's Department believed he was going to the church to investigate a possible burglary.

When Blevins and Officer Nathan Maudlin arrived, they say there were no vehicles at the church and there were no lights on in the building. Officers then began patrolling the area looking for the vehicle and attempted to pull over a vehicle on Rush Creek Road. That's when the vehicle sped away.

The officers then went back to the church and were walking around the outside of the building when they heard something and then saw someone run out of the church and head southwest across a field.

Officer Mauldin chased the man while Officer Blevins got into the patrol car to cut the man off.

Officer Mauldin was able to capture 32-year-old Justin Nelson, who told the officers he was homeless and had permission from the pastor to sleep in the church. After speaking to the pastor, officers learned the man did not have permission to be there and the pastor didn't know the man.

Officers then entered the church and discovered Nelson had been making meth in the building.

Nelson was arrested on several drug related charges.
