(BEDFORD) - Jury selection begins today in Lawrence County Superior Court I.
45 potential jurors reported to Lawrence County Superior Court I this morning and another 45 will report this afternoon.
33-year-old Kyle Hutton will face a jury of his peers after police say he was intoxicated, wrecked his Jeep and caused the death of his wife and another couple in July 2012.
Lawrence County Prosecutor Michelle Woodward filed charges against 32-year-old Hutton of Bedford in May of 2013. He is facing three counts of causing death while operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .15 or greater. Hutton is being represented by Bloomington Attorney Samuel Shapiro.
Hutton is accused of causing the fatal accident on Bailey Scales Road, about 100 yards north of the intersection of Riley Boulevard.
When Bedford police officers arrived at the scene at 11:10 p.m., they found the bodies of 33-year-old Dasan Spires; Spire's fiancee, 38-year-old Laura Duncan and Kyle's wife, 30-year-old Morgan Hutton. All three had been thrown from the Jeep on impact and killed. Police say all suffered serious injuries over their entire bodies.
Police say the Hutton was traveling south on Bailey Scales Road and hit a utility pole on the east side of the road causing the vehicle to flip. Kyle Hutton was also thrown from the Jeep. Police say neither Hutton nor the three other occupants were wearing seat belts during the incident.
The report lists Dasan Spires of Heltonville as being in the front passenger seat and said the two women were riding in the back seat.
Police found Spires near the overturned Jeep. Laura Duncan was found lying off the east side of Bailey Scales Road and the body of Morgan Hutton was found in a wooded area a distance away from the crash scene.
Kyle Hutton left the scene and called 911 from his home at 220 Riley Blvd., not far from the crash site. He told police he couldn't find a cell phone to make the call from the crash site. He was taken by medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.
