Ice Could Affect Southern Indiana - Prepare For Possible Power Outages

Last updated on Sunday, January 11, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) — There is a potential for snow in Northern Indiana, a wintry mix in Central Indiana and freezing rain and sleet across Southern Indiana, followed by cold temperatures. State agencies are advising Hoosiers to prepare now for the frigid weather.

Winter weather, especially ice, can cause power outages. Hoosiers should be prepared to take action should the power go out. Here are some points to consider:

Develop a Plan

Hoosiers can take the time now to develop a plan for a potential power outage. Citizens should look up their electric utility's outage reporting phone number and add it to their cell phone contact list.

Other ways to get ready include:

- Charge cell phones, laptops and any other battery-operated accessories to ensure maximum battery life when without power.

- Know where to go should the power go out. Identify a friend or family member's house, or a nearby shelter that can be used. If none of these are available, identify the most insulated and interior room available.

- Ensure that items in preparedness kits, for the home and especially for cars, are up to date.

- Gather medications and other must-need items in case power does go out.

Take Action

- Should the power go out, notify the electric utility right away.

- If evacuation is necessary, take medications and other must-need items, along with extra clothing to a friend or family member's house, or a nearby shelter.

- If there is nowhere else to go, gather everyone in the most insulated and interior room available.

- Turn off and unplug most electronic devices to avoid a power surge. Leave one light on to know when the power has been restored.
