Former Addict To Speak At Dubois County High Schools

(DUBOIS CO.) - Dubois County Sheriff’s Department is bringing Janie Burkett Harrison to speak at all four Dubois County high schools.

Burkett, who was raised in a pastor's home, chose a life of bulimia, drug addiction and alcoholism which led her to being thrown in jail by the age of 22. After 18 months in prison, she was paroled still dealing with her addictions, but failed in those attempts and after breaking her probation was looking at a 40-year prison sentence. After spending six weeks in jail she went to a rehab center and was finally able to overcome her addictions and now shares her story with others.

Janie's presentation at the schools is for the students, but the public can attend at no charge.

She will be at Northeast Dubois from 8 to 9 a.m. and Forest Park from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27. On Wednesday, January 28, she will be at Jasper High School from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Southridge from 1 to 2 p.m.

She will also give a presentation to the inmates at the Dubois County Security Center, which is not open to the public.

The Dubois Sheriff's Department is paying for the presentation from the inmate commissary fund and a grant from the Dubois County Community Foundation.
