Fire Causes Extensive Damage To Norman Home

Last updated on Thursday, January 29, 2015

(NORMAN) - A Wednesday night fire caused extensive damage to a Norman home.

Firefighters from Guthrie, Shawswick and Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze at 1567 Norman Road around 9:35 p.m. after a Lawrence County Police officer noticed the blaze.

According to Guthrie VFD Fire Chief Brian Hutchison, the home of Marty and Sandy Young, is located just inside the Jackson County line, so Owen Township VFD was also alerted.

Firefighters are not sure how long the fire had been burning before they were notified.

"It was burning pretty good when we arrived on the scene," Hutchison says. "It was a tense situation at when I first arrived on the scene, because we were not sure if anyone was still inside the home. Luckily a family member arrived on the scene and said the family was not home - that was a relief."

Hutchison says it didn't take long for firefighters to contain the blaze.

"But there is significant damage to the interior of the home," he added. "The structure is okay, but the kitchen and laundry room area was pretty well destroyed. There is heat, water and smoke damage throughout the ranch-style home."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Hutchinson believes the fire was electrical in nature.

Hutchinson praised how all the departments worked together to battle the blaze.

Also assisting at the scene was the Lawrence County Police Department, TOPES, and Pleasant Run Ladies Auxiliary.
