(BEDFORD) - A fire damaged two apartment units at Thomasson Court Monday afternoon.

Bedford Fire Department firefighters quickly responded to Ludlow Drive to find smoke and flames bellowing from the apartment building.

Bedford Police Department blocked the entrances to the apartment complex while firefighters battled the blaze.

Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner says the fire started after a worker attempting to remove tile in a bathroom floor using a torch ignited some Celotex in the walls.

"They were using the torch to melt the glue and then scraping the tiles up in a bathroom area," Wagner says. "The flame from the torch reflected under the baseboard and caught the Celotex on fire which smoldered for a few hours and then spread up the walls through the roof."

The men stopped working in the apartment around 11 a.m. when they returned after lunch just after 1 p.m. the smoke alarms were sounding in the apartment.

"Firefighters were able to contain the blaze quickly," Wagner says. "Which prevented this fire from being a disaster."

The fire damaged two units on the east side of the building. One was under renovations and not occupied, the other had one tenant.

"He will have some smoke and water damage, but I believe he will be able to salvage some things," Wagner added.

The tenants of two other units were displaced for the night, but were moving back in this morning.

"There was no damage, but we had to shut off the main power to the buildings and it is being turned back on as we speak."
