(BEDFORD) - City officials are planning to build a retention pond in Englewood Estates to collect storm water.
According to Bedford Plan Director Dan Kirk, one parcel in Englewood Estates, off of 35th Street, was originally designated years ago for a retention pond to collect storm water.
Kirk says when the addition was being constructed the plan was to build the retention pond so the addition would not flood then direct the storm water into the city's storm sewer system - but the developer and contractor never followed through with the plan.
According to the Times-Mail the property was listed in a recent Lawrence County tax sale for unpaid property taxes, but no one purchased it.
After the sale, county officials offered to donate the parcel to the city. According to City attorney Greg Pittman, a tax certificate will be assigned to the city and then Bedford officials will petition Lawrence Circuit Court for a tax deed to place the property under the city's ownership.
City council members voted last week to follow through with that plan. Once the city owns the property, officials can begin plans to install the retention pond.
