(BLOOMINGTON) - Mayor Mark Kruzan invites the community to attend the 2015 City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration.
The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. A reception will precede the celebration at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater at 6 p.m.
The 7 p.m. event will include remarks by Mayor Kruzan, Iris Kiesling, Monroe County Board of Commissioners, Martin McCrory, Indiana University Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Chief Diversity Officer, and Associate Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs, King Commission Chair Nicole Griffin, and others. This event takes place after a day filled with service projects by local organizations.
The keynote speaker is Bennett Singer, an award-winning filmmaker. Singer has been making social-issue documentaries for more than 20 years. His credits include Eyes on the Prize II, the Emmy and Peabody winning series on the history of the civil rights movement, With God on Our Side, and the Question of Equality, all broadcast nationally on PBS. Singer co-produced and directed Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, aired nationally on PBS, and won more than 20 awards in the U.S. and abroad.
Musical performers will include the Indiana University African American Choral Ensemble, directed by Dr. Raymond Wise, and the University Elementary School Choir, directed by Maggie Olivo. Ross Gay, Associate Professor of Poetry, Indiana University will read a poem.
Volunteers who participated in "A Day On! Not A Day Off" will be recognized and the winners of the Commission's Video Contest will be announced. Mayor Kruzan will present the Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award. Attendees will also be offered the opportunity to take the "40 Days of Peace" pledge.
The reception at 6 p.m. will feature light refreshments. The Buskirk-Chumley Theater program and reception are both free and open to the public.
Major event underwriters include the City of Bloomington, Indiana University, Ivy Tech Community College, Stephens Honda-Hyundai, WFIU, and WFHB.
