Bloomington Economic Development Corp. Receives Grant From Duke Energy

Last updated on Wednesday, January 14, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington Economic Development Corporation is receiving a $15,000 Duke Energy Economic and Workforce Development research grant.

The grant, which comes from the Duke Energy Foundation, aims to help cities and towns better understand the impact of new interstate highway systems on communities.

Economic Development Commission President Lynn Coyne says the organization plans to use the grant money to examine land-use strategies for the new Interstate 69. He says the commission's concern is with employment opportunities for the community.

A Battelle Consulting study found a lack of development along the I-69 corridor in Southwest Central Indiana is one of five factors holding back growth in the region.

The commission also hopes to explore how these strategies might affect retention of existing employers who are already creating jobs in the area.
