(BEDFORD) - Janice Nickeo, founder and director of Bertha's Mission, announced that they will be serving meals at the former Three Pigs Restaurant beginning in early February if all goes well.

Their current location, at the corner of Fifth and J streets, is "just too small" to handle demand. The new location at 512 Lincoln Avenue has a bigger kitchen and serving area.

Brett and Heidi Werley, who own Golden Corral, donated their building to the mission. The building recently housed Smokin' Jim's BBQ and was the former Three Pigs Restaurant for many years.

Nickeo says volunteers are working on getting the needed equipment to move in.

"We need stoves, refrigerators and tables," Nickeo says.

The equipment will cost an estimated $10,000.

The group will also spend about $11,000 to finalize the transfer of the building.

"We are planning fundraisers to cover those cost," Nickeo said."God has always provided for us, so I know He will again. "I believe God wants us to make a difference and not just provide a warm meal. We also provide a place for people to fellowship and help others."

One way to do that is to help those without work find jobs. A computer work station will be set up at the new location to help people create resumes and find work.

And the Fifth Street building will become a learning center for those seeking food handler certifications, to teach cooking classes and help other earn their GED.

Hours of Operation

Bedford - Tuesday through Thursday 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Mitchell - Monday and Friday, 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Bertha's Mission is seeking community donations. Donations of meats, canned goods, lemonade, tea and coffee, disposable dinnerware, like plastic silverware, dinner plates, coffee and beverage cups, napkins and cleaning supplies are also needed.

Monetary donations are accepted for other needed items and to pay utility bills.
