April: Queen Crowned, Veteran Honored, $30,000 Raised For Boys & Girls Club

(UNDATED) - April ushered in Spring celebrations with the crowing of the Orleans Dogwood Festival Queen.

16-year-old Madison Sullivan, a sophomore at Orleans High School, was crowned queen with 92-year-old Leopal Busick named citizen of the year.

WWII Veteran Named Oolitic Festival Parade Grand Marshal

Oolitic also celebrated Spring by naming Frank Turner grand marshal of the Oolitic Festival Parade.

Turner is a World War II veteran, who landed at Omaha Beach just six days following D Day. He survived battles and skirmishes across France, Belgium and Germany. As a proud patriot, Turner is one of the oldest remaining WWII veterans living in Oolitic.

The festival was held on Flag Day, June 14.

Dream Playhouse Auction Raises Funds For Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County earned $30,000 at the Dream Playhouse auction held in April.

One highlight of the event, was when thirteen people pooled $13,000 to buy a playhouse and donate it to a child selected at random from 13 students nominated by area teachers. The new owner of that playhouse is Kaulin Murphy, a student at Shawswick Middle School.

Another highlight was when Chief Professional Officer Kyle Brown announced the Boys & Girls Club was the recipient of a grant from the Boys and Girls Club of America, along with Lowe's Home Improvement. The grant is being used to create a teen center at the Thornton building on 16th Street .
