(WORTHINGTON) - A new charge has been filed against a Worthington woman accused of driving drunk through a yard and crashing into a parked car with children inside of the vehicle and then leaving the scene.
The Greene County Daily World reports that 30-year-old Stephanie Hawkins was first arrested on October 30 by Worthington police.
Hawkins appeared in Greene Circuit Court on November 3 for an initial hearing and she was charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent and two counts of failure to stop after an accident. She was given a public defender, posted bond and was released from jail. She was scheduled for a jury trial in April.
Then on December 24, the prosecution filed a motion to dismiss, and that case was closed, but that wasn't the end of it.
On December 29, the Greene County Prosecutor's Office filed a new case with additional charges against Hawkins and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
She was arrested on a warrant on December 30. She posted bond and was released.
In the new case, Hawkins is facing two counts of neglect of a dependent involving placing a dependent in a situation that endangers the dependent, both Level 6 Felonies, two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident, both Misdemeanors; and three additional counts involving operating a vehicle while intoxicated, all Misdemeanors.
All of this stems from an incident on October 29 when officers were called to the scene of a hit and run accident at 9:38 p.m. in Worthington.
Police say they have evidence pointing to Hawkins being the driver of a silver 2010 Chevrolet HHR that belonged to her mother.
Hawkins allegedly hit a parked vehicle occupied by a woman and two young children, came close to striking a man who was standing near the parked vehicle but who had jumped out of the way, then drove through a front yard, around a house and through the back yard before turning and hitting an embankment, then managing to drive up the embankment continuing through a gate and through another yard before turning onto State Road 157 and driving away.
Police collected parts of the vehicle left behind and began a search for the vehicle.
Later that evening, they were called to another residence in Worthington about a disturbance. That's where they located the damaged vehicle.
One of the officers asked for the driver to come out of the home and found Hawkins who was drunk. When she came out of the home she was unsteady and fell on the ground.
Hawkins told police she had been drinking and had been driving the car and was ready to go to jail.
Police say Hawkins' two young children had been in the car with her during the accident.
Hawkins allegedly failed field sobriety testing at the time of her first arrest and tested at an average of .136 BAC on two breathalyzer tests.
