(BLOOMFIELD) - Someone representing themselves as a Greene County deputy over the phone called a Bloomfield resident on Wednesday in an attempt to get their debit card information.
The caller identified himself as "Deputy Calhoun of the Greene County Sheriff's Department."
The resident did not fall for the scam and called the sheriff's department to report the incident.
According to the sheriff's department, the caller was using the department's fax number to call from, but asked the resident to call him back at (202) 241-7879.
The resident did call the scammer back and they were told they needed to supply Deputy Calhoun with their debit card information in order to avoid arrest.
GCSD Detective Sgt. George Dallaire says that "legitimate law enforcement will never ask for your debit card, credit card or banking information so you can avoid arrest. If there is a legitimate court case involving a civil or criminal matter, you will be served valid court documents with a court date."
Police say this scam is not new, and been used in other areas.
Officers are warning residents to use common sense and avoid being a victim.
