(SEYMOUR) - Investigators are hoping fingerprints or DNA found at the scene of a stabbing of a pregnant woman earlier this month will lead to an arrest.

Police Chief Bill Abbott says detectives gathered that evidence from the scene in the 100 block of West Brown Street in Seymour and sent it to the Indiana State Police lab.

Fingerprints have been run through an Automated Fingerprint Identification System to see if any criminals in the database match.

The woman, who is in her early 20s and about 16 weeks pregnant, was at home asleep at 7:30 a.m., when the man entered the residence and attacked her with a steak knife.

Police say the woman was awoke by the man straddling her and fought with the man and that is when he pulled the knife.

The woman was stabbed at least six times, with the worst of the wounds to the woman's right eye and upper part of her body including her head, neck and arms and hands.

Police believe the motive may be an attempted sexual assault, but they also point out that the man stole some small items.

Police said they're not ruling out that the person who attacked this woman may have known her. The problem is that she never got a look at him.

During the attack, police said he held her face down so she couldn't see him and he did not say anything.

The only description police have is a -- white male with short hair. She knew he had short hair because as she was fending him off, she was grabbing at his head. She could feel the hair but could not grasp it.

After the attack the woman fled to a neighbor's pounding on the door and screaming for help. The neighbor called police.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment the baby was unharmed.
