(SEYMOUR) - Police continue to search for a man who attacked and stabbed a pregnant woman multiple times Saturday morning at her residence in 100 block of West Brown Street in Seymour.

Police Chief Bill Abbott said the woman, who is in her early 20s and about 16 weeks pregnant, was at home asleep at 7:30 a.m., when the man entered the residence and attacked her with a steak knife.

Police say the woman was awoke by the man straddling her and fought with the man and that is when he pulled the knife.

The woman was stabbed at least six times, with the worst of the wounds to the woman's right eye and upper part of her body including her head, neck and arms and hands.

Police believe the motive may be an attempted sexual assault, but they also point out that the man stole some small items.

Police said they're not ruling out that the person who attacked this woman may have known her.

The problem is that she never got a look at him.

"The most severe injury would be to her right eye, but she also received stab wounds to her head, her neck, also her arms and to her hands," said Haves.

During the attack, police said he held her face down so she couldn't see him and he did not say anything.

The only description police have is a -- white male with short hair. She knew he had short hair because as she was fending him off, she was grabbing at his head. She could feel the hair but could not grasp it.

After the attack the woman fled to a neighbor's pounding on the door and screaming for help. The neighbor called police.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she is recovering. The baby was unharmed.

If you were in the area of 100 West Brown Street around 7:30 a.m. Saturday and saw anything, contact Seymour police at 812-522-1234.

It is possible the suspect may have had blood on his clothing or minor injuries from the struggle inside the home.
