Paoli Residents Working To Create Community Garden

Last updated on Tuesday, December 16, 2014

(ORANGE CO.) - A Paoli woman is working to create a healthy lifestyle for her family and others in Orange County.

Dessica Albertson has created an IndieGoGo page to raise money to create a community garden in Orange County.

"Unfortunately, people who live in the town/city do not have the same opportunities to grow and harvest food, to taste what food is like fresh from the garden," she wrote on her page. " Our community suffers from an obesity epidemic on one hand due to access to cheap fast food and junk food and a hunger epidemic on the other. Our community has a high poverty rate and fresh healthy food can be expensive."

Albertson and a group of other community members are working to establish a community garden on land currently owned by a local medical clinic.

"The clinic is willing to sell us around 2-3 acres in the middle of town that is accessible to many people who live in apartments on the town square a short walk/drive for many, many others," Albertson added. " Our plan is to plant cover crops this fall to improve the soil quality, plant fruit trees and bushes, and plant a full garden of vegetables this next spring."

But to do this they need funds:

The campaign money raised will purchase the land, trees and bushes, and vegetable seeds. The food raised will be shared with those that partake in growing, harvesting, and weeding and surplus will be donated to the local organizations that feed the hungry such as the Hoosier Hills food bank, the Mercy Center, and the local medical clinics.

By contributing to this campaign you will be providing healthy, organically produced fruits and vegetables for hungry families, many of which are local children, as well as providing a platform for educating children and adults on where food comes from, how it is grown, and how it is harvested, as well as help us to build tighter community relationships.

Where your contributions will go:

$10,000 to cover the cost of the land purchase and create a safer access from the highway as well as establish a water source.

$5,000 to be used to purchase tools, seeds, bushes, and trees.
