Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser For Career Center Teacher Mark Ryan

(BEDFORD) - A Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser for North Lawrence Career Center teacher and former BNL boys basketball coach Mark Ryan will be held on December 13 from 7 a.m. till 10 a.m. at the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church at 13th and M streets.

Mark Ryan is being treated for a rare disease called Pseudomyxoma peritonei, or PMP, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. PMP is a clinical condition caused by cancerous cells that produce tumors cause fibrosis of tissues and impede digestion or organ function, and if left untreated, the tumors produces a jelly-like substance called mucin that will fill the abdominal cavity.

Ryan has agreed to participate in a study on PMP at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His participation will not only help future PMP patients, but also could help his doctors treat him.

He and his wife Dale Lynn will be making six more trips back to Pittsburgh over the next year. Proceeds from the pancake breakfast will help with travel expenses such as meals, gas and hotels.

There is no cure for PMP, but it can be treated with surgery and chemotherapy.
