(BEDFORD) - Tim Day, career center director, is proposing two new courses at North Lawrence Career Center.

The courses would teach students skills in radio and television production and in firefighting and emergency rescue services.

The school has applied for a Perkins grant of $99,952 to help pay for equipment and professional development for a teacher for the radio and TV course. The school would have to pay the teacher's salary. Officials are hoping to hear if they have been awarded the grant by Dec. 31

The course would allow Maria Edwards, who runs the BNL High School TV studio, the opportunity to move into the TV and radio work full-time. Currently she splits time between other subjects.

Day says students would get experience in recording, editing and production processes preparing them for dual credits at at Ivy Tech Community College or Vincennes University.

Students would leave the two-year program with a portfolio to show potential employers and college recruiters.

The program also would give the school more avenues to communicate, whether through covering school activities or community events.

The fire and rescue course is in the beginning stage.

Day is hoping to be able to get "starter" equipment at minimal cost by using or borrowing older equipment from area fire and rescue services.

The course would teach skills in firefighting, emergency response basics, hazardous materials handling and emergency medical techniques.

Students could leave with the aim of becoming a professional firefighter or serving on a volunteer fire department.

Day says, like the radio and TV course, the fire and rescue program curriculum already exists and is certified by the state in a "high demand, high wage" category. State funding is available.
