(MITCHELL) - When construction is completed at the new Mitchell Police station next month, the city will have to address the issues of whether or not the city will lay off some of their dispatchers.

The Times-Mail reports that during the city council meeting the council addressed the issue of the new 911 law which goes into effect on Jan. 1. That law, passed in 2008, requires each county to have only one or two 911 dispatch centers. Those centers will be the Bedford Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.

Currently Mitchell 911 calls are answered at the sheriff's department and then routed to the Mitchell Police Department.

Mayor Gary Pruett does not have an answer, saying the city will continue to be a dispatch center, but will not receive 911 calls.

Construction on the new police station should be complete by next month. Wagler & Sons Construction, of Cannelburg is converting a 1,364 square foot garage space on the south side of City Hall into a police station. The drywall is in place and crews are doing painting, installing fixtures and trim work, installing interior glass, doors and flooring.
