(BEDFORD) - 43-year-old Troy Sanders was sentenced to 180 days behind bars after pleading guilty to a December 2013 battery.
He was then sentenced in a second case, to a three-year term in prison, with one year suspended that will be served on supervised probation.
In the second case, Sanders was arrested after he was involved in a domestic fight, threatened a police dispatcher, fled from officers and stabbed himself seven times, during an incident in April.
Officers were called to the 1000 block of Tulip Street at 5:32 p.m. on April 1, after a report of a domestic fight between Sanders and a woman. Police spoke to both, and thought the situation was resolved.
However, at 12:29 a.m., April 2 police received a second call reporting Sanders was intoxicated and was tearing up the house. Police say Sanders allegedly battered two men and a woman at the home He then fled on foot before police arrived.
While police were at the home, Sanders showed up at the Mitchell Police Station and told the dispatcher he was armed with a gun. The dispatcher radioed police and Sanders fled.
Officers from Mitchell, Lawrence County and Orleans began a search for Sanders.
According to Mitchell Police Chief Mike Hardman, officers located Sanders and he was arrested but not before Sanders had stabbed himself seven times.
Hardman believes he thought Sanders was trying to commit suicide by police.
"He was waving his arms around like he was armed with a weapon," Hardman says. "He told officers he was going to shoot them."
Officers were able to restrain Sanders and place him under arrest. They did not find any gun. Sanders was taken to IU Health Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
"We believe he stabbed himself so he wouldn't have to go to jail," Hardman says.
One of the men and the woman who was injured during the domestic fight with Sanders did not seek medical treatment for their injuries. The second man was taken to the hospital and was kept for observation.
