(SEYMOUR) - DNA found on the knife believed to have been used in a stabbing of a pregnant woman nearly two weeks ago in Seymour has led to an arrest.

26-year-old Justin D. Colvin of Seymour was arrested at a residence in the 200 block of South Vine Street.

He faces preliminary charges of burglary, robbery, aggravated battery, criminal confinement and battery.

Police Chief Bill Abbott says detectives gathered evidence from the scene in the 100 block of West Brown Street in Seymour and sent it to the Indiana State Police lab which confirmed the DNA found at the scene was that of Colvin.

The woman, who is in her early 20s and about 16 weeks pregnant, was at home asleep at 7:30 a.m., when Colvin allegedly entered the residence and attacked her with a steak knife.

Police say the woman was woken up by the man straddling her. She then fought with Colvin and that is when he pulled the knife.

The woman was stabbed at least six times, with the worst of the wounds to the woman's right eye and upper part of her body including her head, neck and arms and hands.

Police believe the motive may have been an attempted sexual assault, but they also point out that Colvin stole some small items from the home.

During the attack, police say that Colvin held the woman's face down so she couldn't see him and he did not say anything.

After the attack the woman fled to a neighbor's house, pounding on the door and screaming for help. The neighbor called police.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. The baby was unharmed during the incident.
