County Continues To Address Bridge Repairs

Last updated on Wednesday, December 3, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Highway Superintendent told the commissioners Tuesday morning that they had finished work on the bridge on Sandpit Road.

Crews milled down the concrete decking, patched it and repaved the bridge.

The repairs cost around $7,200.

Holmes estimates the repairs should hold for a couple of years, but more work will need to be done on the bridge before 2016.

"We have some damage on the underside of the bridge that will have to be addressed," Holmes says. "Hopefully the repairs we made will keep good for another couple of years. That bridge see a lot of heavy traffic for being a county road."

Crews will be addressing the approaches to the bridge on Mount Pleasant Road in the spring.

"We will have to let things settle before we before we can pave," Holmes says. "I know it doesn't look the best, but there is nothing we can do now."

In other business:

Highway crews have been cutting brush, restock and hauling sand, replacing county road signs, and laying gravel on some county roads.

The commissioners passed an ordinance for a new fee schedule for the Lawrence County Morgue.

"We are really seeing an increase of out-of-county work," says Commissioner Bill Spreen. "When we decided to build the morgue we were hoping to generate some revenue from out of county and we are."

Commissioner Chris May added that before the fees were approved, Coroner Rob Herr had checked with other counties about their fees.

"We are are in line with those other counties," he added.

Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 119 inmates at the jail, of those 23 are females and 4 are Department of Correction holds.

The fencing for around the radio tower at the jail arrived, but was returned because it was not what the county ordered. Once the new material arrives, the fence will be put into place.

Craig also says the work on placing the flag poles in front of the jail will begin this week, weather permitting.

The commissioners approved immunization contracts for the health department.

Flynn & Sons Construction was hired to do snow removal around the courthouse, at courthouse plaza and at the sheriff's department.

The commissioners approved a contract with Espy Services to conduct a utility audit for the county. Espy Services is an independent telecommunications and energy auditing firm that will work to find money owed to the county by scrutinizing the county's utility bills for errors. Espy Services will seek out those errors and then request refunds. Espy will be paid 50 percent of funds recovered. If no funds are recovered Espy is paid nothing.
