Last updated on Tuesday, December 9, 2014

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man is facing charges of domestic battery and disorderly conduct after he was caught fighting with a woman at the intersection of 16th and K streets, Monday afternoon.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, an off-duty police officers was traveling east on 16th Street when he noticed a commotion at the intersection.

The officers saw 26-year-old Matthew Couch arguing with a woman.

"The officer saw Mr. Couch grab the woman by the face or neck and then appeared to punch her," Parsley says. "Two other individuals came out of area businesses to see if they could help the woman. At the same time, the officer called for backup and then stopped and confronted Mr. Couch."

The officer asked Couch to sit down until other officers arrived.

"He (Couch) continued to yell and was told several times to stop," Parsley says.

Couch was then advised he was under arrest for domestic battery.

"Officers were getting him to his feet when Mr. Couch became combative and had to be placed back on the ground until he would calm down and cooperate."

Couch was arrested on charges of domestic battery and disorderly conduct.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries, did not require medical treatment.
