31 White-Tail Deer Harvested At Spring Mill And Cave River Valley Nature Preserve

Last updated on Tuesday, December 9, 2014

(MITCHELL) - During four days of hunting, 31 white-tail deer were killed in an effort to reduce the population at Spring Mill State Park and Cave River Valley Nature Preserve.

Officials say that number is down from the 55 taken in 2013, and 57 killed in 2012.

Officials say the decrease could be attributed to weather changes, deer mobility or the fact that the population is at a healthier level. Because of the weather the deer were either bedded down or had left the park area.

During the first two days of the hunt, Nov. 17 and 18 - 40 hunters killed 13 deer at Spring Mill while 19 hunters took seven deer at Cave River Valley. The final two days of the hunt, Dec.1 and Dec. 2 - 61 hunters culled nine deer at Spring Mill and 20 hunters took two deer at Cave River Valley.

Property Manager of Spring Mill State Park Mark Young says the reduction report from the two properties has been sent to the state Department of Natural Resources office for review and he will not know until late spring, early summer if the park will be on the deer reduction list for 2015.
