(MITCHELL) - A workshop designed to help improve livability and mobility is open to the public.

Anyone interested in making their community more accessible and livable for people of all ages and abilities is invited to participate in a free workshop today in Mitchell. The workshop will address such issues as efficient public transportation, sidewalks and pathways, and bike-friendly streets.

Health by Design - an Indiana nonprofit that advocates for neighborhoods, public spaces and transportation infrastructure that promote physical activity and healthy living - will lead the workshop at the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living Banquet (SICIL) Hall, 1500 W. Main St., Mitchell.

Attendees will hear practical advice on how to help achieve better connections between the places people live, work, learn, shop and play. Through discussions and activities, they'll also learn how to promote transportation options and to help shape public policy.

"Creating livable, accessible communities doesn't happen overnight, so we want to give people the tools they need to get started and continue promoting safe, active and vibrant communities," said Kim Irwin, Health by Design executive director.

This event is being held in partnership with the Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities and the Indiana Citizens' Alliance for Transit.
