(WASHINGTON) - With one year still left on his term Washington City Councilman at large Eric Bassler has resigned from the seat.
The Washington Times Herald reports that Bassler, who was elected to the Indiana Senate on Nov. 4, presented a letter to Washington Mayor Joe Wellman stating the Nov. 10 meeting would be his last.
Unlike many offices where people are elected in November and take office in January, members of the Indiana General Assembly are sworn in within a couple of weeks of election night. Organization Day for the Senate will be Nov. 18.
Bassler's resignation will impact more than the city council. He also has served on the city's Board of Public Works and Safety. He will also have to step down from that spot. Mayor Joe Wellman will be naming a replacement to his spot on the board.
Bassler's successor for the remainder of this term on the city council will fall on Republican precinct committeemen in the city's 15 precincts. So far party leaders have not announced a date for a caucus to elect his successor. Daviess County GOP Chairman Jan Schuler-Hicks says that a caucus will be held the week of Thanksgiving or the week after the holiday.
