Steve Grissom To Speak At Veterans Day Event

(MITCHELL) - Burris Elementary School plans to honor military veterans with a Veterans Day program at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Steve Grissom, a relative of Mitchell astronaut Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, will be the speaker.

Grissom a graduate of Mitchell High School and Purdue University, was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. He flew 100 combat missions in Korea.

Grissom was one of the seven Mercury astronauts selected by NASA in April 1959 and flew two Mercuty missions. He died on Jan. 27, 1967, in the Apollo spacecraft flash fire during a launch pad test at Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

A reception for military veterans and their families will be held in the Burris cafeteria immediately after the program.
