(MITCHELL) - Today, Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a dinner and open house of its new facility on Main Street in Mitchell.

SICIL was conceived to advocate for people with disabilities, the wheelchair bound and visually impaired, to get better access to government and local businesses so they could participate in the community.

Advocacy is still at the forefront, but SICIL has branched out into the home care business, assisting with home care, grocery shopping and house cleaning for people who want to stay in their homes instead of moving to a long-term care facility. SICIL employs 120 part-time and full-time employees and serves people in nine counties. SICIL also operates a guardianship program.

About a year ago, SICIL purchased the old Carpenter building, now named the Mitchell Professional Building. SICIL uses a portion of it for its Living Well home care services, and converted other rooms to use as banquet rentals.

To keep the agency focused on accessibility issues, half of its board of directors must be made up of people with a disability. Only two employees don't have a disability.

The public is invited to SICIL's open house and tours of the Mitchell Professional Building Thursday from 4-6 p.m. A dinner follows at 6 p.m.
