Shots Fired During Rape Investigation - Three Arrested

(BLOOMINGTON) - At approximately 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Bloomington police were called to a possible rape in progress in the 500 block of East 12th Street.

According to Bloomington Capt. Joe Qualters, the caller told police she thought one of her roommates might be being raped. When officers arrived they noticed the door was partially opened and saw a male inside the doorway.

The officer identified himself as a police officer and then heard two gunshots.

The officer went to the west side of the home and saw a two males coming out of a window and then fled south of the building. There was another gunshot as one of the men fired at the officer. The officer then returned fire.

Police found one of the men in a nearby alley after a brief foot pursuit and he was arrested.

The second man was located in a vehicle parked on a nearby street and he too was arrested.

One of the men was struck in the arm and the second had been hit in the leg. Both were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The officer was not injured during the gunfire exchange.

Three men are in police custody. 19-year-old Michael W.L. Deweese and 19-year-old Vaylen Keishaun Glazebrook, both of Indianapolis, were arrested on preliminary charges of attempted murder, rape while armed with a weapon, burglary while armed with a weapon, confinement while armed with a weapon, intimidation with a weapon and resisting law enforcement with a weapon, all of which are felonies.

19-year-old Jesse Benti-Torres of Danville was arrested on preliminary charges of burglary while armed with a weapon and assisting a criminal, both of which are felonies.

Two of the men, Deweese and Glazebrook, were hit by the gunfire.

Benti-Torres was also located and identified during the course of investigation. All three men were booked into Monroe County Jail Sunday night.

The investigation remains active with suspect, victim and witness interviews being conducted and evidence being gathered.

An internal investigation is also pending regarding the officer's discharge of the Department weapon while in the line of duty.
