Salvation Army Bell Ringers And Volunteers For Mens Shelter Needed

Last updated on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The Salvation Army will help provide Christmas blessings to between 250 to 300 families this year - but they need your help.

To assist families at Christmas and provide help the rest of the year, the charity will be out in force in the coming weeks ringing the bell for donations. Capt. Donna Rose says the goal for this year is to collect at least $40,000. Last year's kettle campaign raised $38,000. She is also requesting that shoppers take a tag or two from the Angel Trees.

With so many people needing help, Rose is asking organizers of Christmas gift and food giveaways to contact her to avoid duplicating efforts.

Bells won't start ringing at most locations until the day after Thanksgiving, but Price Less IGA on Fifth Street in Bedford and ACE Hardware in Mitchell will have kettles up sooner. Angel trees will go up at ACE Hardware and Walmart, the day after Thanksgiving.

In Bedford, bell ringers are needed to man kettles at Walmart, Kmart, Big Lots, Price Less IGA and JC Penney.

More volunteers ringing the bell means Salvation Army spends less paying people to ring the bell. To volunteer, call 275-5429 or 583-3965.

Last winter, the Salvation Army operated a warming center for men needing shelter. Rose said that will open in January. Volunteers will be needed.
