(BEDFORD) - Gene McCracken has been named the grand marshal for the Bedford Revitalization Inc. 2014 Christmas Parade.
McCracken will kick off the parade December 6 at 6 p.m. through downtown Bedford.
The parade committee chose McCracken for his dedication to the community. McCracken was a business teacher at Mitchell High School for 33 years. His wife also was a teacher at Mitchell High School and is now retired. He currently serves on the Lawrence County Council and is the executive director Lawrence County Economic Growth Council.
There is still time to participate in the parade, entries forms are at the Bedford Chamber office at 1116 16th St., and online at bedfordinparades.com/parades/festival-of-lights-christmas-parade.
Entries are due by noon on Nov. 24.
The theme is "Sights and Sounds of Christmas." All units should have some sort of lighting during the parade and judging, which is between 4 and 5 p.m. Units entered into the parade should have a parade or Christmas theme. No candy is allowed to be thrown from moving units.
Other events
Mayor Shawna Girgis and assistant Debbi Andry are organizing a singing program, which will start at 3 p.m. at the Harp Commons stage on J Street on the square.
Free carriage rides, sponsored by German American, will be available in front of the Harp Common stage from 3-5:30 p.m.
Super Oldies will be announcing the parade from the downtown area. The station will also do live broadcasting before the parade begins from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Maria Edwards will film the parade for Star Station, and Shannon and Deb will provide audio for the film. Shannon and Deb will also live broadcast the parade on Stars 99.3 from the front of the Bedford Chamber.
Jim Sowders is having a Santa Hat Run at 5:30 p.m. before the parade. It will start at M and 15th streets and follow the parade route, which is about one mile. An entry fee of $10 dollars is a suggested donation. All proceeds will be split between the Norm Taylor scholarship fund and Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services. Registration will be from 4:30-5:20 p.m. at Bedford Middle School, or pre-register at the Bedford Chamber Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
BRI is asking attendees to bring a canned good or non-perishable item to the parade. Collection boxes will be on every block around the downtown area. Collected items will be split among the Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor Food Pantry, Salvation Army Food Pantry and other local food pantries.
