One Injured After Motorcycle Collides With Pickup

Last updated on Tuesday, November 11, 2014

(BEDFORD) - One person was injured after a two-vehicle collision on Ind. 258 and Ind. 37 Monday afternoon.

According to a Bedford police report, 53-year-old Robert Fiddler of Bedford was traveling west on Ind. 158 and had pulled to the shoulder of the road to wait for his work crew to catch up and get set up for work. Once they caught up, Fiddler told police that he checked his mirrors for oncoming traffic and then pulled the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab pickup truck, owned by Johnny's Signs Inc., onto the roadway to make a u-turn to get into position to block the roadway so another of his work crew trucks could make a u-turn to get into position.

Fiddler told police he heard brakes screeching and then saw a 2002 AMF motorcycle coming up behind him. The motorcycle driven by 51-year-old Steve Hamblin of Shoals then sideswiped the pickup truck.

Hamblin told police that he thought Fiddler was going to pull along the work crew to talk to them so he stayed in his lane of travel on Ind. 158 and prepared to pass the pickup truck and other crew members when all of the sudden the pickup truck pulled out in front of him and turned.

Hamblin told police he did not have time to stop or swerve to avoid the crash and his motorcycle struck the truck and he was thrown from the motorcycle.

Hamblin, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered minor bleeding from his head and was taken by ambulance to IU Health Hospital for treatment.

Hamblin was cited for driving while his driver's license was suspended..
