Mitchell Opera House Should Be Reopen By July

Last updated on Monday, November 3, 2014

(MITCHELL) - Hoosier Uplands is moving forward with plans of rebuilding the Mitchell Opera House.

Hoosier Uplands recently purchased the Opera House from the city of Mitchell for $1 with the intention of rehabilitating the historic building and reopening it as an entertainment venue.

Hoosier Uplands Chief Executive Officer David Miller is excited about the Opera House's future. The goal is to have the Opera House opened by July 2015.

The Opera House project falls under Hoosier Upland's community development and improvement program.

Miller says some projects in the program have included the purchase and clean up of the Frank Street trailer park in Mitchell, the demolition of several dilapidated homes in Bedford and Mitchell and facade projects in Shoals, French Lick and West Baden Springs.

The Opera House is one of their more unique projects.

Miller says the building is in good shape, but over the years bats have nested inside and droppings litter the interior, which will require a professional firm to clean and rid the building of vermin.

Once that is complete the building will be sealed so critters cannot enter the structure.

Hoosier Uplands will add a new heating and air conditioning system, new stage lights, new sound equipment and an audio-visual system.

The building will be remodeled to allow better access for those with disabilities and to create a second rest room out of the ticket booth area.

The exterior will be tuck-pointed, roof patched and windows repaired, as needed.

With seating for 398 people, the Opera House will retain its historic integrity. It will be available for private rental, but Miller also plans to hire a part-time manager who will be responsible for booking entertainment, scheduling community programs and marketing the facility.
